LAVERNE BEATRICE LUCKO (nee MELNYK) March 6, 1927 - January 12, 2006 With deep regret we announce the sudden passing of Laverne (Luba), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Paul; son Paul Jr. (Helene); grandchildren, Laryssa and Christine; brother Bert (Latisha) Melnyk; sisters, Ethel Hoffman, Sylvia (Richard) Smith and Helene (Don) Peacock; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Laverne was predeceased by her sister Vivian and nephew Steward Corbett and her sister Elsie Semchuk. Laverne was born in Ethelbert, MB, to Nicholas and Mary Melnyk. As the daughter of a railway man she saw her fair share of rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Laverne often fondly shared her memories of growing up in Cranberry Portage and of the time she spent at the Mohyla Institute in Saskatoon, as well as the people she met along the way. Laverne and Paul were married in September of 1952, and their life together took them in several memorable directions, not the least of which was owning and operating the Assiniboine Lodge at Grand Beach. Eventually they sold the lodge and settled down to raise a family, but Grand Beach was in Laverne's blood. She and Paul built a family cottage there, and it was the centre of many gatherings for both family and friends. Laverne enjoyed travelling, visiting many parts of the world. She was always eager to see new sights and catch up with distant relations and make new friends. Many thanks are extended to nieces Gay-Anne, Tammy, Candy, Renata and families for their special support and caring. Also, a special thanks to Bruce, a lifelong and special friend who has always been there for our family in so many ways. A family memorial service was held in Laverne's honour on January 17. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Laverne's memory to St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation. May God bless you and keep you, forever. Vichna'ya Pam'yat
